If you’re considering Botox and dermal fillers to blur those fine lines, sometimes the only thing that gets blurry is knowing the difference between the two. Botox and dermal fillers seem like similar treatments but it’s important to know they are two very different things.
So to help clear the confusion, we sat down with our Nurse Practitioner at Dolce Vita Med Spa, Emily Bates to find out exactly how Botox and dermal fillers differ and the important things to know before considering treatment.
What is Botox?
Botulinum toxin, is a naturally occurring protein that is used to temporarily relax facial muscles that cause lines and wrinkles. Botox works by using this Botulinum toxin to temporarily paralyze the facial muscles responsible for causing the fine lines and wrinkles that make you look older.
Botox® Cosmetic is the result of many decades of advanced medical studies and has been used extensively over the decades. It is the most well-known brand for treating fine lines and wrinkles because of it’s safety and certification in the medical field.
What is Dermal Filler?
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally-occurring component that our skin cells produce that gives our skin strength and the ability to bounce-back. When we are younger we have a plentiful supply of hyaluronic acid in our bodies, but as we age our stores of this magic youth-booster diminishes and the skin loses its strength making way for lines and wrinkles to creep in.
Dermal fillers involve the injection of hyaluronic acid through a tiny needle deeper into targeted folds of the skin. It essentially “fills in” areas underneath the skin adding subtle volume to lift and plump. Dermal fillers are an excellent choice for treating a range of fine lines as well as deeper skin depressions.
What’s the Difference Between Botox and Dermal Fillers?
The biggest difference between Botox and dermal fillers is how they work. Botox essentially works by temporarily paralyzing muscles in the face to prevent the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and dermal fillers plump the muscles underneath the skin causing fine lines and wrinkles to smooth out and “fill in.” But to keep it simple we have outlined a few basic bullet points.
- Botox is more commonly used for smoothing out wrinkles and creases in the forehead, between the eyebrows and crow’s feet.
- Dermal fillers are more commonly used in the lips and for marionette lines ( vertical lines around lips)
- Botox take 5 to 10 days to see results
- Dermal fillers produce instant results
- Botox lasts 3-6 months
- Dermal filler results depending on the type of filler used, some last up to six months and some up to two years
- Both can cause some redness, minor swelling or bruising
